So our new office is still on schedule to be move-in ready on time. And yes, it's gorgeous and LEED certified silver, going for the gold. Our first official day at 1999k is September 1st. What does this mean for the rest of August?
That it's going to suck.
Really, I don't think it will be that bad, at least not for me, the individual. We've had plenty of warning, plenty of instructions, and now we have plenty - 6,000 - blue crates to pack things up in and move right next door. The recruiting department has always excercised a very liberal policy of throwing away crap we don't use (a big component in my adoration for this department), so we are in excellent shape.
Some of my attorneys... not so much.
I know you. You're that packrat who cannot part with a single piece of paper, even though it is forever captured on your Outlook account. And in five files somewhere else. Or maybe you have random toys completely covering your workspace. I've been in your office. You cannot see your desk. You work on a corner on a laptop, hunched over.
Never mind that you are a partner with an office the size of two associate offices. You might only have a slim pathway from the door to your chair carved out, so forget holding any meetings there. Never mind that the files that litter your floor are covered in dust and/or are not even active anymore. Don't even get me started on your bookcases, which are full of outdated manuals that you haven't touched in 8 years.
Your secretary secretly (or maybe not so secretly) despises these practices, because she will be the one ultimately responsible for getting things from your current office to your new swanky one next door. Please remember this come holiday time. I'd say a good rule of thumb is $10-$20 for every box she has to pack. Or better yet, send her an email of gratitude now, and a week after the move, and remember to copy her secretarial manager.
But don't you dare print that email out!
